Training for Boston

Well last year at this time I blogged about starting to train to qualify for boston. this year I start my training to run boston. I'm excited to see where my training takes me this year. I am upping my miles from 50 a week. to 50-70 a week. so it's gonna be pretty intense. Also I'm about 3 weeks into learning to swim. I plan on doing a number of tri's next year as well. with the ultimate goal of doing an ironman the following year. I have a long ways to go with swimming. But i'm making slow progress. I think the cross training of swimming and biking will help my running as well. So it's going to be a busy winter of training. but i'm looking forward to it. I just can't get that st george ironman billboard out of my head with the caption "Defy Yourself" I believe i've already defied myself with the marathon and the 50 miler. But that's the good thing about dreams. If you accomplish it it's time to make a new one.

Back when I was a young boy. I was a very ambitious boy scout. I always earned all my badges and had a lot of fun earning the different ranks. When I was trying to advance from the 2nd class to a first class I had to swim 100 yards. I tried and tried. My scout master was in the water with me watching me fail. I gave it all i had. But that wasn't good enough. No one ever taught me to swim. I lost interest in scouts. Lost my book. And never advanced. Swimming was my road block. Now here I am 18 years later. Learning to swim so I can do triathlons. Today I swam 100 meters. Roughly 100 yards. It was a big day for me. Moral of the story is. Well i'm not really sure. but let's say don't give up. You can do anything you set your mind to. Today I swam 100 meters. I plan on being able to swim 2.4 miles in open water and then ride 112 miles on my bike, and then run a marathon.. And yes I will do it.

Ogden Valley 50 miler 2011 Race Report

Ok so first of all I was still pretty nervous for the 50 miler this year. Even though I ran it last year I trained way different this year. Last year I was doing 30-40 mile runs for my long runs. This year I ran three marathons and only trained for them. The last one I did was 2 weeks before the 50 miler.
Friday night was the regular sleepless night. I’m pretty sure I didn’t get more than an hour of sleep with the tossing and turning and having to wake up at 2:30. I woke up had some sour dough toast and a peanut butter honey sandwich. I finished double checking my list of things to bring which included, Antacids, Imodium A.D. oranges, hammer perpetuem drink, Vaseline, headlamp, baby wipes, reflector vest, band aids, ipod, headphones, arm sleeves, jacket, compression socks, flashing signal, phone, beanie, sunglasses, gloves, pepto tablets, handheld water bottles and my running hat.
I arrived at mountain green at about 4am. I was the very first one there. Last year I spent the night in a hotel near the start line but this year I just slept at home to save money and be able to sleep in my own bed. It was 50 miles from my house in Lehi to the start line in mountain green. Finally the race people started showing up and one by one other racers started arriving. I started getting all my gear on. The temperature was right about freezing. I had the thought to grab some socks (which I never run in) but I must have forgotten them. So that started stressing me out. Cause when I got out of my car it was soo cold. I was almost ready to start asking other runners for some socks. I went to the bathroom a few times. Checking out all the other runners. Trying to guess if they were advanced ultra runners or novice like me. Then some guy came up to me and introduced himself and said that he had found my blog in trying to find anything he could about the OV50. He said that he had enjoyed reading my blog and even asked me if Jimmy Joe would be pacing me again. It was cool knowing that something I had done and written about had influenced somebody I didn’t even know. So we made our way over to the road. Turned on our headlamps and it was time to start the journey. 3-2-1 go. 50 milers start off quite a bit slower than all the other races I run. But I quickly made my way up to the front with the leader. After about a mile or so we turned and headed up the canyon. I knew I needed to start off slow and hold back but I also wanted to stay up front with the leader. We were able to keep a pretty decent pace considering the first three miles had about a 900 foot climb. After a few miles this guy came up behind us. He was carrying no water bottles or pack or anything. He just cruised right by us. So I decided to leave the other guy and try to keep up with this guy. After a mile or so with me behind him he stopped to go pee and I was in the lead. But it was short lived. He soon came cruising right past me with ease. I guessed that he would be the winner of the race. After a while I decided to ease off the pace a little. By the time we reached the 5 miles of up hill the two guys that had taken turns leading slowly got further and further away from me. It was still dark and cold. But now was the time to head down the canyon. The next 5 miles had about a thousand foot decent which was fun. I ran around 7 minute miles down the canyon. It was hard to go much slower than that. At the bottom of the canyon I had a choice. Left or right. The course was different this year. Which I found out after the race started. So I had to make an educated decision left or right. Cause I didn’t see an arrow on which way to turn. I turned right. For the next to or 3 miles I kept looking back hoping to see someone to verify I was going the right way. But I couldn’t see anybody. I thought about yelling up ahead to see if the guys in front of me could hear me. Or even flagging down a car to see if they could tell me if there were other runners ahead. Finally at a gas station I saw an arrow and an aid station. Which consisted of 3 or 4 vehicles that stopped every few miles to take care of us. I was so happy to see them. I absolutely did not want to have to turn around an run and extra 6 miles if I was going the wrong way. They left me and said we are going to go catch those two guys ahead of you. They left me and off in the distance I could see their tail lights so I wasn’t too far away from the leaders. By this point my toes had thawed out from the cold and I was feeling pretty good. Had some consistent 8 and a half minute miles. Still pitch black outside I made my way through Huntsville on some back country roads. There was one point where I almost missed a turn, but luckily I saw it and turned right. The course did double back at that spot and met up with the original road. I was doing good until about mile 20 or so. The sun finally came up.. I started taking some gu’s and getting nutrition in me. By mile 20 this was the point where I was starting to get real tired and real nervous as to how the rest of the race was gonna be. Last year I was doing 30-40 mile long runs for most of the year. This year I had only trained for marathons with long runs no longer than 20 miles. At about mile 22 my pace slowed and I started getting real tired. Dropping down to 10 minute miles. Still taking my walk breaks about once a mile. I knew if I could just get to mile 27 that’s where I’d be meeting up with my little brother jimmy joe that would be pacing me the last 23. I had made pretty good time up to this point hitting the 26.2 around 4 hours or so. I was worried he wouldn’t be to the aid station yet but by 26 and a half he came driving up in his car. I was pretty excited to say the least. I tried to say something to him but I was pretty chocked up and couldn’t get much out. He turned around and went to the aid station to wait for me. When I got there the volunteers were so great and motivating. Treating you like royalty. They were so great. I changed my wardrobe. Taking off the running pants and the jacket, beanie and headlamp. Switched over to hat and sunglasses. Ran inside the church and went to the bathroom. Drank some beef broth soup and we were on our way. This was the first time I had to go number two. Which is a big difference from last year. Last year I was so sick most of the race probably went to the bathroom like 10 times. This year I took some immodium a.d. and antacids and it seemed to keep things under control. It was so good to have my pacer with me. It was like a fresh start. One thing was kinda weird when I got to the aid station they told me I was in 5th place. The whole time I knew I was in 3rd. they told me the first female was even ahead of me. After thinking about it I’m positive that they missed the turn in Huntsville and cut off 3 or 4 miles and passed me there. I mentioned it a few times to the people putting on the race but they just kept telling me that she was an all American. But it wasn’t worth the fight so I said whatever and kept going.
The next ten miles were still pretty hard. My hamstring was acting up making uphill’s extremely hard. This part of the course was pretty flat with slight uphills. the scenery was breathtaking. The fall leaves, the country roads, the reservoir. It is such an amazing course. I had about 4 miles where I started to get extremely chaffed. I had forgotten to put on some glide or Vaseline and it was starting to hurt bad. And affect my running. Finally one of the aid vehicles stopped and I vaselined up and was good as new. I think it was around mile 37 or so that I took another imodium and it was real weird. It got stuck in my throat and I kept drinking Gatorade and it stayed there. Finally I started gagging and I told jimmy joe to hold on. I then spewed out about 2 water bottles full of Gatorade. When that little session ended we were on our way. I did get pretty dehydrated after that. I only had a little bit of over sugared Gatorade that was only making me sicker. 3 hard miles of that and finally and aid vehicle stopped and after I got some water in me I felt great again. Well as good as could be expected. The whole time I’ve been munching on pretzels, gu chomps, sport beans gu’s. pretty much I was taking anything that had caffeine in it. At 11 am I took some more ibuprofen. April finally arrived with the kids. It was great to see them. Having tons of support helps so much in racing. It’s like you can feel the collective support from everyone you know and love from your immediate family to your friends on facebook. It helps so much knowing that there are so many that care for you and want you to succeed. We rounded the lake and it was time to start the hardest part of the race. The five miles of uphill. With about a thousand feet of climb it was sooo hard. Jimmy joe finally came up with a system of run for 30 seconds walk for 30 seconds. It helped us climb the hill much faster than just walking the whole thing. Mile 44 had 424 feet of climb. I was running on pure will at this point. Finally at the top of the hill I knew it was 5 miles of downhill and we were done. This was by far the funnest part of the race. After doing 13 and 14 minute miles uphill. The 7 minute miles we were doing downhill felt like we were flying. I hit my runners high and cruised down that hill. This was also the part where doug (my brother in law) was taking video and april was taking pictures and my dad taking video as well. So it was perfect timing. We hauled down that canyon and it was amazing. We got to the bottom and rounded the corner and we had about half a mile to the finish line. With about a quarter mile we really picked up our pace for the big finish. I crossed the finish line with my awesome little brother right behind me and my family there to greet me. I let out a yell as I crossed the finish line. And felt great. My runners high was still there. I gave my wife a hug and kiss and was so happy to be done and to have completed that journey. I crossed the finish line at 8 hours and 10 minutes. 9min 42 sec average mile. I was ecstatic with my time. 2 hours and 10 minutes faster than last years race. Officially I took 5th place overall. Which was pretty cool to. I still think I took 3rd place but whatever. I stoked about the time I got. And striders does such a great job at putting on the race and taking care of their runners. I think I’ll have to make this part of my racing schedule every year. So this completes my 2nd season of running. With 3 marathons, 3 half marathons, one 50 miler and some 5k’s. Now I’ll take it easy for a month or so then it’s time to start training for Boston in April.

The will to run 50 miles

Recently we watched the Green Lantern. the part that I loved in the movie was
the part about a persons will being the strongest power in the universe. Even stronger than
fear. Tomorrow i'm running a 50 mile race. This will be my second time running this distance.
I thought that this year would be easier cause I know what to expect. But I think that's the part the
makes this even harder. I know what i'm about to go through. I've trained different than i did last year.
So honestly I know what to expect in the race but I have no idea how my body will handle this
distance with the type of training I did this year.
I think most people might have the conception that people doing things like this, are able
to do so because they have no fear. truth is i'm scared to death to go out and run this distance
with 16 miles of grueling uphill. But I have to remind myself that my will is stronger than my fear.
And my will can get me through anything. If we go through our lives avoiding things that we are
afraid of, then we will never grow. We will never find out what we are made of. We will never become
the person we are meant to be.

Layton Marathon

Layton Marathon. 2nd place overall. This was a pretty nice course. It was weird to run one that wasn’t mostly downhill. This was mostly flat with lots of little uphills. I was in 2nd place for most of the race. At mile 13 when we met up with the half marathon that had just started. (which was annoying) that’s when I finally took the lead. I was in the lead for the next 10 miles or so. Finally towards the end when a few half marathoners passed me apparently a full marathon guy passed me. Which I was completely unaware of. So when I finished I was sure that I took 1st. but they informed me that another guy had come in 2 minutes before me. But hey 2nd place is still pretty cool so I was still happy with that. Overall my stomach felt pretty good which is usually my biggest challenge in races. I had a tough patch from mile 5-7 where I wasn’t feeling so good. But it passed. I felt pretty strong the whole race but definitely lost some steam the last bit of the race. After I was done I finally felt like eating ice cream sandwiches. They always have those after races. But they’ve never sounded good until today. Now just need to recover in time for my 50 miler in two weeks.

Lisell Mari Pedersen

She is from Norway and she is 17 years old. She likes salad, salami, Pork, Salty snacks, shopping, watching movies, and......Thats pretty much it. haha We have really enjoyed getting to know her and we are excited to have her here for the rest of the school year. We have gone a few fun places with her already. Lake Powell was probably the funnest thing we have done so far. Davey will post a video later that he made of that. ANyway... Welcome LISELL WE LOVE YOU!!!!

Mile 26 was probably the hardest mile I’ve ever run. My legs were cramping up. I was dehydrated from throwing up. Each step was so hard.

Well let’s back up a little. On Sunday night we took our kids over to April’s sisters house. Jimmy joe and his wife slept over at our house since we had to wake up at 2 am. We got to sleep at a decent time. I probably got a solid 2 hours of sleep or so. With some tossing and turning. Most of it was the usual race day nerves. Part of it was worrying about april. She was planning on running the race after taking the last 2 months off of running due to her knee bothering her. I told her not to run it but she’s kind of stubborn like that. Anyways, I wake up. Get all my stuff together. Take a gu pack and my pinole. Then we load up.

Me, Jimmy joe, April, and Rochelle. We head up to the energy solutions arena where we hop on the bus for the long ride up to the top of east canyon. Lot’s of joking around and having fun. Every once and a while I would start a fake sentence with “when I did my 50 miler” just to see how many heads would turn. The bus driver gets a little bit lost on the way up there, but there were enough know it all’s on the bus to get us up there in good time. We pull up to the starting line with long lines at the port a potties and lots of other people just as crazy as us hanging out and having a good time. We had quite about an hour before race time so we layed down in the weeds and had a good time talking and laughing. There was a crazy smelly hippy runner with a long beard that kept trying to get in front of the port a pottie lines.

Finally with about a half hour to go before race time a say bye to the fam and start my pre race warm up. As we get closer I make my way to the front of the pack at the starting line. Most of the elite racers knew who each other were. I saw the arrogant british guy who ran the freedom run with his british shorts and british flag. What a punk. Also the smelley hippy bearded guy was the very front guy. I wondered if he might be as fast as he was emotionally unstable. Eventually it’s race time. The two hand cyclists take off one minute before us. Then 3-2-1 bang! And we’re off. It’s still real dark with the 5:30 start time. So I wore my sunglasses on top of my head. I could see the first racers for the first few miles then I didn’t see them again. I knew I needed to hold back in the first few miles and not push too hard. But I guess my inexperience kicked in and the downhill and competition was just too tempting. Mile 1- 5:39. I back off a little bit for the 2^nd and 3^rd mile but not much. 5:46 and 5:52. People are still passing me but I figure I’ll catch them later. Mile 4 rolls along and I’m still feeling pretty good. Just enjoying the downhill and taking advantage of it. The canyon feels great and looks amazing. We would pass through little pockets of real cold air that felt soo good. Around mile 5 I pass a large meadow that I saw some deer prancing threw during one of my training runs up here. 2 Girls pass me which did bother me a little bit. This whole year in all my races I have been faster than the 1^st woman. But I let them go and thought more power to them. Finally we hit the 2 mile up hill heading up little mountain. The ONLY hill I was mentally prepared for. I had done 3 or 4 training runs in this canyon so I knew exactly what to expect. I kept a fairly good pace up the hill with mile 7 at 7:24 and mile 8 at 7:14. I also passed the 2 ladies that passed me a few miles back. Which felt good but I was pushing pretty hard up the hill so I didn’t know if I’d be able to stay ahead of them.

At the top of the hill I walk for a bit to rest my muscles for a bit. Then it’s off down little mountain. Mile 9 was 6:14 then mile 10 was where I slowed down a bit with 6:53. Mile 11 was 6:13 but I was working pretty hard to maintain that pace on a steep downhill. Then I have 4 consistent miles of 6:22. Which is pretty close to my goal pace but this was the downhill part. I was starting to realize that once I got out of the canyon I wasn’t going to be able to keep up my pace. We got out of the canyon and ascended a little hill around mile 17 which I was prepared for as well. Mentally. Hit mile 18 with a 7:17 pace. My legs were real tired. I had read online about a pretty steep hil around mile 18 so I thought if I could just get by that I’d be good. But mile after mile there were some downhill’s mixed in with uphill’s which I was not ready for. I hit mile 19 with a 6:54 pace. A few racers have passed me since the canyon in fact the 1^st female runner had been ahead of me for about 5 miles. At mile 19 I took my gu w/ caffeine and kept pushing on. It was real hard to get down. Anything during a race besides liquid is hard to swollow. Around mile 21 I choked on my own spit and started throwing up. I had Gatorade coming out my mouth and nose. I’m sure it was quite the site for the cars and spectators. After I finished that little episode I yelled out “I’m Ok” to the people watching me and started moving again. That mile was 8:33. After that I felt a little better. Mile 22 was 6:45. The whole race my mind wanders off to wondering how april is doing. Is she laying on the side of the road. Is she crying. I have to stay focused on my race then find a phone and call her when I’m done. Miles 22-25 were real hard. Just trying to move forward. My legs are completely shot. Walking a once or twice each mile. With 8:05, 7:27, 7:22 for miles 23-25. I was able to pass the 1^st woman in this section who was struggling real bad leaning over on her legs. I wanted to give her some motivation as I passed her but I didn’t have any to give. Finally in the last mile we get to run on the parade route. I was expecting this to be the funnest part of the race. I pictured all the people cheering us on and giving me energy the way they did a few years back when I skated the 5k in a spiderman outfit. Well it wasn’t anything like that. Everybody was just waking up. One teenage boy had a star balloon and kind of sarcastically said you’re a star. Zero energy from the crowd. Then with about a half mile left my thighs and my calves start cramping up. Which is something I’ve heard about but was something I’ve never experienced. At this point each step is so hard and that mile took sooo long. But I just kept moving. Thoughts kept going through my head like this is so hard. I don’t know why anybody does this. I reach liberty park and make my last turn. I felt completely different from my sl marathon finish. There was no sprinting. Barely able to move forward at a jog. I fought the canyon and the canyon won. I see my family and get a little emotional. As hard as the race was that’s still the best part. Seeing all your loved ones smiling and cheering you on. Regardless of how you performed. I end up finishing the race in 2:58:53.

About 10 seconds slower than my sl marathon time. But I was happy to find out that I finished 11^th overall and beat the top woman. I didn’t get the time I was shooting for but it was an extremely hard course. In the finisher section I ate some oranges drank some water and sat down by a little swimming pool they had full of ice water. I kept dunking my head in it and it felt so good. My dad and brother were over talking to me and I wanted to get up to go see If jimmy joe was close. But the first time I got up my legs seized up and I wasn’t able to stand. I waited another 10 minutes and finally with some help I was able to get up and walk over to the massage table to get rolled by some foam rollers

I found a phone and called april on her cell phone and she was at mile 17 or something and was tearing up and in a lot of pain. Which made me start tearing up. I was so worried about that stubborn crazy woman. My legs were still pretty cramped but I made my way over and ran my little brother in the last mile.

Then Rochelle came in around 4:50 and then I started walking to find april. I made it back about a half mile and found her. I was so happy to see her. She had found a running buddy who she said was heaven sent. They both had the vibram 5 fingers on and was their first marathon. I jogged in with them to the finish line.

After it was over I found her in the finishing gates and she almost collapsed in my arms and cried and said I’m never doing this again. She sat down and revealed her huge blood blisters. I couldn’t believe how bad they looked. The guy sitting next to me just kept saying how tough she was and that I shouldn’t mess with her (which I don’t’) I was so proud of her. What an accomplishment. She has never run in her entire life and here she was at the end of her first marathon. What an inspiration. Anything is possible if you just set your mind to it.

The whole day was an amazing experience. It was so neat to see our family out there running again. My dad( who hasn’t run a race in over 20 years) and my mom and older brother and little sister were all out there to run the 10k. The experience of running races is something you only understand if you do it.

Oh and just a sidenote, that crazy bearded hippy runner that started at the very front. He finished just under the 6 hour mark.

Race Report So let’s start with Friday. I did my best to do some good carb loading on Friday. Something I’d never really tried before. Spaghetti for lunch. Lasagna for dinner. Even taking some carbohydrate shakes during the day. Went to bed around 9. I wasn’t able to fall asleep for quite some time. I get real nervous for any type of race or competition. This one was no different. I even threw up on my last recovery run on Friday cause I was so nervous. I set my alarm for 4am. I really didn’t need to wake up till 4:45am but I needed to get 200 calories in me 3 hours before the race. (recommended by my book advanced marathoning) So I woke up took two gu packs and tried to go back to sleep. No good. So I got up. Got everything together, made my pinole (cornmeal, cinnamon and honey) just like I do before all my runs, and headed downtown. Parked at the Gateway. It was just starting to rain. I wasn’t too excited about rain cause I didn’t bring any of my rain gear. I was there pretty early and I didn’t want to be too early to the starting line so I sat in my car, trying to relax and envision crossing the line sub 3 hours. Finally I headed over to the shuttle which was trax. I just missed the last one so we had to wait out in the rain for like 20 minutes or so. The ride up took like 25 minutes. On the ride up I was sitting next to two ladies and a guy all running the half marathon. The subject of the Book Born to Run came up. One of them asked what It was about. I proceeded to tell them about how American runners are always getting hurt even though we have the best sports medicine and the conspiracy of nike selling bigger and bigger running shoes just to make a profit, not to benefit the runners, by the time I was talking about the tarahumara Indians and their road races in thin sandals the whole place had quieted down and there were like 30 people listening to what I was saying. It was pretty funny. Nor sure if they were intrigued by what I was saying or if they wanted to beat me up cause I was insulting their running shoes. Finally we arrived. I planned on going to the bathroom one final time before the race started, but over the intercom they started telling everyone to get up to the starting line.

Over 8 thousand people were starting with the half and the full combined. I saw a few familiar faces. A kid I went to high school with, who was running the race off of a bet and had only run 10 miles up to this point. I saw Demetrio Cabanillas, who is a local running legend from mexico who still holds the record for the deseret news marathon. I try to do some warm ups as the national anthem starts. Then I saw a kid that I recognized from the Ogden valley 50 miler. I asked him how he did he said he took 3rd and finished in 8 hours. Pretty impressive considering it took me 10 to finish. I made my way, almost to the front of the line, and before I knew it the race had started. The kenyon and a few other white guys took off pretty fast. A good downhill to start the race. I knew I had to be careful to not burn out early in the race. A few minutes into the race and I looked at my garmin and I was at lite a 5:45 pace. So I slowed down to the 6:40 pace that I was shooting for. Lots of runners passed me. Mostly half marathoners I’m guessing. The first few miles I worked on getting into a nice running rythym. I focused on my breathing. Around mile 3 I found 2 guys that I could use as pacers. They were going about the pace I wanted to be running. But they kept on going faster. Finally while we were making our loop around sugarhouse park I decided to let them go.

Around mile 5. I found another guy that was going about my pace. I kept being overcome with excitement, just knowing that this day that I have worked every day for since December was finally here. And I was doing it. I was running my 6:40 or so splits. No injuries. Good weather. Things were going good. The half marathoners split off from us and the runners really thinned out.
Every aid station I got to I would walk and drink the powerade, after about 10 seconds or so it was back to work. We pass the 13.1 mark with a split of 1:27.

Right on schedule. After the halfway point is when the real mentally tough part of the race started happening. I couldn’t think about the distance I had left. Mile after mile. All I would think about was that mile. Run in the now. Just get to that next turn. Or that next aid station. Every aid station I’d stop and walk and my running buddy would keep running. After about a quarter mile more each time I’d catch him till the next aid station. We talked a little. He was trying to qualify for Boston as well. This was his 13th marathon and his last marathon he finished in 3:10:45. Missing qualifying by 45 seconds. He’s also run some ultramarthons as well. Lots of people cheering us the whole way. It’s amazing how much somebody you don’t even know cheering or clapping or ringing a cowbell can give you energy. My two favorite posters I saw were “toenails are overated” and “ Chuck Norris never ran a marathon” Made me laugh. It helps so much along the way to have these people rooting for you. By mile 18 or so it started warming up a bit so I disposed of my beenie and cheap gloves. Ran a few more good splits. Mentally and physically it’s starting to get real tough. We meet up with the half marathon again. By this time it’s the walkers. It was kind of fun passing tons of people but also hard making our way through the 5 people walls they would form taking up the whole road. I was planning on eating whatever gu the race provided but they never gave any. The only thing I brought were some sport beans. After two hours I started eating those at the aid stations. By mile 22 we reach liberty park.

The end is starting to feel closer. Just gotta keep moving. As we enter the park I pass the two guys I was trying to keep up with earlier in the race. I’m not gonna lie it felt pretty good passing them. We round liberty park and at this point in the race the specators are really cheering for you when they see you are doing the full marathon. Each person gives you little burst of energy. From mile 24-25 was real tough. We headed up state street. It was awesome seeing the capitol and know the finish was so close. At this point I pass the guy I knew from the 50 miler. You know the guy that finished 3rd and two hours faster than me. Not gonna lie. It was even funner passing him. Finally we make it to the top of the hill and head down south temple. My buddy is about a half mile ahead of me. I start picking up the pace. Dodging all the half marathon walkers.

Finally I catch my buddy and try passing him. He picks up his pace as well. I’m getting real excited now. My goal and dream is now becoming a reality. Right as I turn on to 400 w I see jimmy joe and Joanna. So good to see a familiar face.

I get some more energy. Jimmy joe runs with me for a bit. He tells me I’ve got 10 minutes to qualify for boston. I say I’ve got 3 minutes to beat 3 hours. He stops and calls the family .2 miles away to warn them of my coming. We start picking up speed. We round the corner. I look down at my garmin and it says 26.1. Then a complete runners high kicks in and I start sprinting.

I leave my running buddy behind and he says go get ‘em. I break into a sub 5 minute pace. Overwelming excitement and gratitude come over me as I cross the finish line at 2:58:41.

I made my way through all the food and stuff. I find my family. Tears are streaming down my face. The emotions are real strong when you are physically exhausted. I see my dad and we are both too choked up to really say anything. We hug. We go meet up with everybody together.

Chatting and taking pictures april says my lips are blue. She gives me a jacket and I’m shivering pretty good. And I have to go to the bathroom. So we go inside old navy. I go sit down in the bathroom. And I think that was the moment when the full reality of what I had just accomplished really sank in. I started crying like a baby. Partly from complete exhaustion, partly from gratitude for having completed my dream. I said a silent prayer thanking my Heavenly Father for allowing me to run. And staying with me throughout my training and through the hardest parts of the race. What an amazing experience.

I love running so much. And I appreciate so much my family and friends that are there rooting me on whether it be in person or not. It helps a ton to have all that support.

One Year of Running

Well it's been one full year since I began running. One year ago I started training for my first marathon. When I first started, my knees were hurting after about 3 miles or so. I had heard about the so called "runners knee" as they called it, and I just accepted it as getting old. Here I am one year later. 1,300 miles later, who would've thought i'd still be running. It has been quite the journey. I read 3 books on running. Even took a personal class on the techniques of Chi running. I think the most important thing i've learned about running is it's not about what's on your feet. But for someone to fully understand what that means they have to accept the fact that is has everything to do with what's on your feet. The whole running world is obsessed with finding that perfect running shoe that saves you from injury and helps you go fast. I was always taught the wrong things about running. Get big thick shoes, run with big long strides, heal striking, and that injuries are part of the game. Well it's just not true. The truth is there is no perfect shoe. The only advice I can give on picking a shoe is you want as little shoe as possible. I've run in vibram 5 fingers, the Huarache Sandals, and now the asic pirahna racing flats. The less shoe you have on your foot, the stronger your body will be, thus preventing injuries. Most runners just think barefoot/minimalist running is a bunch of nonsense and continue getting injured and buying big shoes. It's almost like trying to convince someone of a new religion. I love running. I love that I have inspired some people around me to start running.
Everyone is born to run. It's in our DNA. Everyone is built for it. The human body is an amazing thing.
I doesn't matter why you do it but you have to find your why. I love pushing myself. Finding out what I'm made of. Pushing myself to utter exhuastion, till i'm ready to cry, and then digging down deep inside of myself and finding a way to keep on moving. Well I think I've rambled on long enough. To anyone reading this. You are greater than you ever thought you could be. It's easy to make excuses and jokes about yourself. The hard part is making the decision to get out there and do something. Your body will thank you. Get out there and start running. If this joker can do it. Anybody can.

Qualifying for Boston

So my goal i've set for 2011 is to run a marathon in under 3 hours and 10 minutes. That works out to a little over a 7 minute mile. My previous best for a marathon was 3:43. So i've got some work to do. I read a book called advanced marathoning that has a pretty intense training schedule that i started a few weeks ago. It's pretty much 7 days a week. It has some cross training days. I don't run on Sunday so I do double workouts on Monday. It's a whole different world from beginner marathon training to advanced. I got my lactate threshold tested at the U of U. I bought a nice garmin gps watch with a heart rate monitor. I'm still training in my Asic Pirahnas, my racing flats, they're the same shoes I ran the OV 50 miler in. Some people wonder why i'm not running in the vibram 5 finger shoes that i did my first marathon in. But i'm a firm believer in, if it works don't fix it. Right now these shoes are working perfect for me. So i will continue to run in them. Most important thing to know about running shoes is, you want to have as little shoe as possible. the less shoe you have under your feet the stronger your feet, and knees will be. For Christmas i got a magnetic recumbant excersize bike for my cross training days. I do most of my runs outside, unless the roads are too snowy then i do the treadmill.
I have decided that why not me. Why can't I run a marathon in under 3 hours, why not 2 and a half hours. I know that there are some genetic differences between most runners and those that break world records 2 hours 3 minutes for the marathon. But why not me.If they can do that i can do 3 hours, atleast. I'm doing it for me. To set a goal and accomplish it. I like documenting my runs on facebook because I hope it inspires those around me to get off the couch and go get some excersize. I love the way i feel after running. I feel strong. I hope to be able to run marathons with my grandkids. So anyways enough rambling. I just wanted to publicly declare my goal of of breaking 3:10 for the marathon during 2011. I'm currently training for the salt lake marathon in April. Wish me luck.

Only problem was he almost pee'd his pants. I love the smile on his face at about 2 seconds to midnight. I love my family.

So every year for the last 5 years or so, we have done a danceoff at Christmas. Everybody sleeps over at my mom's house and the later it gets the crazier it gets. Usually nobody really wants to do the danceoff but when it's over they're glad they did. This year we or I decided to do a music video to change things up a little. We really are cool, just acting like nerds. Really we are.

Ogden Valley 50 miler

Ok so I want to write this down while it's fresh on my mind. I did it! 51 miles. My first ultra marathon.
Heres the story,
So I drove up and slept over by myself in Ogden so I could be close to the starting line. I didn't sleep much the night before. Woke up about 4 am. Made it over to Mountain green to the starting line. There is a little fire going and all 28 runners. Just kinda hanging out, joking around. I here things like, yeah this is my 9th 50 miler and seeing tshirts from the wasatch 100. After a quick rundown of the course and how the aid stations will work. We all walk out to the road. the race director says everybody ready? Alright, GO! So we all start off together down the very dark road. It felt surreal at the beginning. We all had our headlamps on and gear. I had been looking forward to this day all year long. Everyone has their little groups. Everyone stays together for the 1st mile. After the 1st mile some stop to walk a bit. I usually do the same thing, but decided to just keep going and not walk till mile 3. We proceed up old trappers loop. 8 miles and about 2000 feet elevation climb. All the way up the canyon the runners are spreading out more and more. My
headlamp is helping so much. Some rocks in the road and lots of horse poop to avoid. Run a mile then walk a mile. Finally after what seemed like forever we reach the summit. then down hill. For the aid stations we had about 3 trucks that kept driving ahead and giving us, gu's, sandwiches, gatorade and anything else we needed. I had to go number 2 a total of 5 times the first half of the race. Finally by about mile 10 the sky is starting to light up and I can turn off my headlamp. My stomach starts getting pretty upset. Can't really eat anything. trying to force some things down. We get to mile 15 and get to pineview resovior. We check in at the Aid station and I drop my headlamp and sweater I had been wearing underneath. then I head out around the lake. the sun finally start to peek over the mountains. The scenery is just breathtaking. All the fall colors. The runners are way spread out by now. I get to the west side of the lake and get to another aid station about mile 19. Just after I pass them my stomach is feeling more upset than ever. Finally I throw up. My stomach feels much better after and i'm able to run the next 3 miles at a pretty good pace. The next aid station I grabbed some pretzels just to try them and they tasted soo good. For the rest of the race I continued to eat pretzels. for the last 10 miles i had been pretty miserable. Secretly hoping a mountain lion would jump out and maul me and i would not be able to finsish the race. Ate some gu's to keep my calories up. I also started eating the gummy sport beans that had a bit of caffeine. The lake gets out of site for 6 miles or so and the rain starts to sprinkle. at mile 26 I meet up with my little brother and his wife. What a life saver he was. First of all something to look forward to. But also somebody to chat with and motivate me. I've never run with somebody before and I have to say I really liked it. We hit about 5 miles of pretty cold rain. Wet and cold. Trucks are driving by splashing us not giving us enough room to run. I was able to convince jimmy joe that he needs to run this race with me next year. Joanna, his wife did a great job documenting the rest of the run stopping every few miles taking pictures and videos. After rounding the lake we hit the canyon again at about mile 36. Stopped in at the aid station for a while and piled up on goodies. I took a gu pack with caffeine in it. I've always avoided the caffeine ones cause i've heard about how your energy just drops off after the caffeine wears off. But i ended up loving it. So we headed back up the canyon, another 8 miles of uphill and 2000 feet elevation climb. those hills were intense. usally like 300 feet of climb or so per mile.We make fairly good time considering the climb. We are able to pass 3 runners. Finally we reach the summit and start heading down. I'm feeling pretty good. My stomach is feeling good, the jelly beans, caffeine gu packs and pretzels are doing the trick. On a side note it's kind of weird what happens to you running the long distances. You get real emotional. I'll think about my wife or kids or something and just start crying. I've turned into a softy.We get to mile 46 and my beautiful wife pulls up in the mini van with the fam. After a kiss and some pix we are on our way. Rochelle, AKA super sister joins up with us to run the last 5. The downhills are acutally pretty rough, but easier than the uphills. So we get to the last 2 miles and someboday that we passed is starting to catch us. At first we are determined to stay ahead of him, but finally i say whatever, if he passes me, oh well. So we get down to about 1.5 miles to go and we take another walk break and He is about to pass us then I decide. Nope we are doing this. We get down the canyon road and head down the home stretch. Suddenly something comes over me. I pick up speed. Rochelle starts to drop behind. Then i get to about a quarter mile of the finish line. And i suddenly get more energy than i've ever had before. I hit my runners high. I break into a full on sprint. Jimmy joe starts saying things like, you don't have to do this. he's falling behind, slow down. we don't have to do this. And i reply yes i do. finally i break into a full on sprint to a 6:39 mile pace. I see the finish line. Suddenly I get emotional. Tears start coming. I feel amazing. I push all the way to the finish line. My legs felt great. I've never felt anything like that before. I kiss my wife. Hug my kids. Let out some celebration yells. April says i was acting like a total crazy man or like a kid who just got some marijuana for the first time. I felt so good at the end. Hard to describe it. I'd definately like to do this race again. Had lots of family there to support me. It helps so much knowing that those that love you are waiting for you at the finish line. I ended up taking 17th in the race out of 28.
51 miles, 10 hours 21 minutes and 7,093 calories later i did it. I set a goal and accomplished it. What a journey it has been. and what an amazing race. I've never been so low while running and never been so high.

Invincible

Well just when you think you're invincible, your two year old daughter
drops tickle me elmo on your foot and you can't run anymore. Well
thats pretty much what happened this week. Just a little update on my
running. I've been training all year for a 50 mile race. Well it's a week from
Saturday. I've put in a lot of time. My furthest run has been 40 miles. In had
been running atleast a marathon or further every monday for the past two
months. Well I made it to my last week of training and Daisy Drops Tickle
me elmo right on my toe. It hurt real bad. Then the next day i get the bright
idea to do an 8 mile run, and try to do it at a Boston qualifying pace. Just to
see if I could. Well i did, but the next day i tried going for a run and couldn't make
it 3 houses down the road. So I took this entire week off. Pretty depressed about
what happened. But this is not the end of the story. My foot is feeling better and
I plan to run the race next Saturday. Not even Elmo can stop me. So, yes i'm scared
to death to run that far, even before I hurt my foot I was scared and I know this
will be one of the biggest challenges of my life.
But sometimes the moments that challenge us the most, define us.

So I don't post very much on the blog anymore. Thanks to Facebook. But hey that's ok. Here are the pictures april took of Zades 1st Day of School. this is his 2nd year at Mrs. Tawni's Pre-school. He is growing up so fast. Pictures are the only way to freeze time. I love every second I have with my kids. Zade is such a little ball of energy. the sweetest little boy. I see a lot of myself in him. He loves stickin it to the man and living life to the fullest. Anyways i've rambled on enough. Here are the pix.

The Road to Finishing My first Marathon in The Vibrams

So it all started about 18 weeks ago when I felt like my body was once again decomposing. I played basketball once a week, but not really getting a lot of excersize. Not eating good, cheetos, ice cream every night. Getting fat wasn't really a problem, just not feeling very healthy. So I decided to start running. For a week or two when I would get up to 3 miles or so, my knees would start hurting. (which is why I gave up on trying to run a marathon like 5 years ago) I asked for some advice from those around me, kept trying things and nothing worked. My knees kept hurting. Figured I was just getting old or just had bad knees or something. But I really wanted to run. So I went to Runners Corner in Orem and asked if they could give me a knee brace or band or any advice to help me. He told me there are two kinds of runners that almost never get injured. Ultra marathoners and barefoot runners. Ultra marathoners, i didnt really know what that meant at the time and barefoot runners?? I didn't even know such a thing existed except in 3rd world countries. So he gave me a website to look at and I went home and one thing led to another and I found the vibram 5 finger shoes. So we I went back in to the store to try some on and finally bought a pair online(they were backordered with a waiting list at the store) Took them out for a short run and what do you know, no knee pain. come to find out I had been striking wrong. the heal strike is BAD. I had to learn to run all over again. with a midfoot strike. So i was just loving running. It felt so awsome to be running without pain and feeling the ground beneath me. I then decided to sign up for a marathon. If these shoes could help my knee pain, then maybe I could fulfill my dream of running a marathon. I signed up for the Utah valley marathon which was about 15 weeks away at this point. The training was going great. Once I got into the longer runs i would experience some TOPF. top of the foot pain. some tenderness on the top of my right foot. (which came from not taking enough time to transition into minimalist running) I would ice it after the run. I also read the book in about 3 days "Born to Run" Which is an incredible book about a secret tribe in mexico the Tarahumara indians who run hundred mile foot races in a thin pair of sandals. Incredible book which then got me excited about not only running a marathon but aspiring to the 50 and 100 mile Ultra marathons. So the training was going great. I ran my 20 miler at about an 8 minute pace. then i got curious to see how close I could come to running at boston marathon qualifying pace for my 8 mile run. which is a 7:10/mile pace. So I ran and pulled something in my foot. a tendon or something. But instead of stopping I kept pushing through the pain. bad idea. I did keep up the pace, but i paid for it after. The whole next week i had to take off cause I was limping around barely able to walk. After a week of resting and icing i did an another 8 mile run. had to walk every half mile or so cause it was hurting. What was I going to do?? 2 weeks away from my marathon. What i'd worked and trained so hard for. I was so frustrated. I went to runners corner and bought some ultra lightweight racing flats. shoes. I took the next two weeks off of running completely with the occasional trip to the gym to do the excersize bike to keep my muscles working out. I took the new shoes with me and would do like a quarter mile jog in them. So foot did hurt up until the marathon. So in those last few weeks i had a decsion to make. Run in the vibrams, which i had done every single one of my training runs in. Or run in the racing shoes that my give me a little more support and save my foot but possibly risk blisters and blood and pain. the day before the race i spent praying, asking everyone around, me, discussing with my wife, on which shoes to wear. I was set on the racing shoes. I'd rather get a few blisters than hurt my foot in the vibrams and risk not finishing the race. Then the finally, call it inspiration or gut feeling. I did a last minute switch and decided to stick with the vibrams.
RACE DAY
So after shooting my wedding I finally got to bed at about 11:30pm. Woke up nice and early at 2:30am. Figured out how to stap my timing chip on to the velcroe of the vibrams, got my gu's and electolyte drinks ready on my back, pinned my number on, had some pinole for breakfast and headed out. I met up with my little brother, his wife and my little sister who were all running as well. I got there and it was a mad house of trips to the bathroom taking ibuprofen and other last minute preparations. We drove to the provo mall where the race started. there's buses everywhere runners everywhere. My little sister headed over to the half marathon bus and we found our bus. the bus ride up seemed like it took forever. Completely dark we couldn't see anything around us. After what seemed like a really long time we got to our destination. We all got out of the bus, it was still completely dark. We could see a light up in the distance, so not really knowing what to do we all just started wandering up the hill. It's kind of hard to describe what that felt like. We thought that's what it would be like if we died and were in heaven just following the crowds of people. We arrived to the lights. 100's of restrooms and runner in line for the restrooms. Time for one last stop. We got in line and someone on a mic said we needed to head up to the starting line RIGHT NOW! So we jumped out of line and headed up the road a little further. 10 minutes to start time. We jogged a little to warm up. Got tired pretty quick. all these things going through my head. Will my foot hold up in the vibrams? one run in the last 3 weeks, how am i gonna do this? I walked by 3 kenyans, you know the guys that win races at superhuman times. I smiled and said "you guys gonna win this" they glared at me and looked away. Okay, moving on to the start line. It was so crowded we got there at the end so we were right at the start. We're all waiting for it to start and it starts pooring rain. I had already made the decision to not wear a grocery bag or even a long sleeve shirt. Just skinny old me with my short running shorts, a thin shirt, no socks an my 5 finger shoes. First the handbikes' gun went off. One minute later it was our turn. the gun goes off. Walking for the first 30 seconds or so. the kenyans dissapear into the night. then we're doing it. All this preparation, all this planning and training for this day and it's happening right now. I forgot to take a gu pack before the race so i pull one out of my pack and another one drops out on the ground, so i turn around and run against traffic and find it and pick it up. I run the first mile with my little bro and his wife, lots of chatting and joking, then after some hi fives I decide it's time to get serious. First mile goes by at about a 8 and half pace. So i decide just for fun to see if I can catch up to the designated 3:10 pacer guy, who the race hired who ran that pace the entire way. Another runner asks me about the vibrams and continues to run the next 10 miles or so with me. At mile 10 we could see the 3:10 pacer. But i was starting to tire out. Finally my running buddy says good bye and and takes off. Slowly by mile 15, i'm getting pretty tired. the mountains and scenery are just breathtaking. The rain has let up. Taking my gu's every 45 minutes. stopping every once and while for a bathroom break. The downhill is pretty rough on me. Consistently after mile 10 i'm slowing a bit and runners are passing me barreling down the hill. Not exactly easy in the Vibrams. Little steps the whole way. I get to mile 16 and get a text from my sister who says the kenyans just finished. then another saying my little my little sister finished the half marathon. I get a little choked up thinking about how proud i am of her for accomplishing that. Getting to mile 20 i'm real tired. Mile 21 i take my last Gu pack. We're out of the canyon now heading towards the mall. Lots more people cheering now. Each one cheering puts a smile on my face and gives me a little energy. I keep thinking about the finish line where my family will be waiting for me. Each aid stations from here on out i walk for a few steps to drink and regain my composure. Just gotta keep moving, just gotta keep moving. Every 15 minutes or so someone passes me and comments on my shoes. My legs are tightening up. So tired. Just gotta keep moving forward. Then mile 25 rolls around and i can see my older sister rochelle. She makes the phone call to let everyone else know that i'm coming. I get a little choked up once again, so greatful for the support. One last hill to go up before seeing the finish line. She gives me some energy to pass one person up the hill. We round the corner and head down the home stretch. I'm getting emotional seeing all the people I love there, cheering me on taking pictures, so excited to see me. I cross the finish line in 3 hours 53 minutes. So glad it's over. I get a nice participation medal. I make it through all the runners and find my wife and kids. right when i see them and can't hold back the tears. I can't even talk just kissed my wife and kids, so happy to see them and have them there to support me. It's hard to explain why it's so emotional finishing a race like that. Such a trial of strengh and will power, and then to have the people you love cheering you on when you need it the most is just an awesome experience.
I'm so tired and sore from the race, but it was so much fun. and so worth it.
I did it. And I did it in my Vibram Five Finger shoes.
I'm a marathoner. Now on to becoming an Ultra marathoner.

Zade and Daisy's Birthday Party

So we had a 3 kid birthday party, Zade, Daisy, and Audrey (Zade's cousin on april's side)
We had it at classic and it was ton's of fun. Crazy but fun. We had some awesome faundant cakes made by my sister in law joanna. Zade loved riding his scooter around the track. It's all he wanted to do the whole night. we had to drag him away to have him open presents. Thanks to everyone that came.

The Lasik Experience

So i got lasik today. I wanted to write down my experience cause i'll probably forget how it all went.
My appointment was at 11:45am at the Lasik Vision Institute. April dropped me off cause I wouldn't be able to drive myself home after. I was to wear clothing that wasn't fuzzy and no hairspray or cologne. First the painful part. The payment. They ran my card, $1,500 per eye. Which comes with a lifetime guarantee that if my vision ever changes they will fix it for free. They then ran a few more tests to make sure everything was ok. They also plugged my tear ducts which will last for 2 months then dissolve. Then I was put in the dark waiting room. They gave me a kit with sunglasses, 2 different eye drops and some sleeping eye covers. I'm in line behind one guy and 2 other ladies come in behind me. We are all given a hair net thing and booties to go over our shoes. The guys goes in first. While he's in there the lady next to me starts getting real nervous and asking for a valium. She ends up not getting one because she would have to walk to a pharmacy and then it would take another 40 minutes to kick in. I update my status on facebook and notice april's status that says that she just watched a video on youtube of lazik and said it was the most disturbing thing she'd ever seen. With that in mind it was my turn. One final eye check and they lay me down under the laser. I have opted to do the flap open the cornea way as opposed to the scratch off the cornea way. The doctor tells me to look at the orange light and hold still. He puts some numbing drops on my eye then proceeds to pry open my right eye which was a bit painful. Then he gets the round suction cup thing and keeps suctioning my eye trying to get it just right. He tells me I might want to consider the scratch off the cornea way cause I am at hi risk for a bad flap, because of my eyes being kind of small or something and i can't hold still. He says if i get a bad flap i will have to wait 3 months for the flap to heal and come back then for my surgery. Quick decision and I tell him to just try it again, so he numbs me again, pry's open my eyes a little bit more and after 3 suction cup tries he cuts open my cornea and everything goes black for a few seconds and then comes back. He says the cut went good and to hold real still and look at the orange light. So i'm holding real still and can feel my arms start to shake and I hear some one else count backwards 6-5-4-3-2-1. And thats it. 6 seconds for the actual lasik. He puts my flap back down and kind of paintbrush glues it shut and thats that. So for the left eye i'm praying that I can hold still again and that i will get a good flap. Second flap went well. 6 seconds later. 20/20 vision. it's great. i have to use eye drops a lot over the next few weeks, but even by the end of the day my eyes are hurting less and less. They were totally bloodshot at first but they are looking better and best of all feeling better. No more contacts for me. Ever. Sorry so long. But that's the lasik experience.

Moments like this is why I love being a Dad. This video is recorded in the dark so there is no video just audio. Over the last few months Zade who is 3, his I love you's have been growing longer and longer. It started out with colors of the rainbow, then sparkles and now it has evolved into shapes. I finally recorded it tonight.
I love him so much.

Christmas 2009

So here is a little video of santa's visit to our family.
Christmas eve is for sure my favorite part of Christmas.
I get so nervous when I'm ready to play santa. There is so
much pressure to not mess it up. To keep the tradition going.
Zade was so excited for Christmas. He loves seeing Santa, he gets
to see him once at our house christmas eve and another time
at my moms house the next day.
We did our family Christmas eve thing then woke up and had a Christmas
Breakfast with April's extended family. I learned one thing from
the breakfast. It's a bad idea to put 5 dozen eggshells down the
garbage disposal. Lets just say we had a bit of a mess to clean up.
Later that day we went to my moms house where we exchanged gifts and
just had a great time. We did the dance off again. It will probably
be the last time we do it with the adults. I think from now on we will
teach a little dance to the kids. Jimmy Joe and I played chess until about
4:30 in the morning. He is getting better but I am clearly the dominant player.
The next morning we went paintballing up near the bountiful temple with
doug, jimmy joe, joanna, johnny, april and myself. There was a lot of complaining
cause it took so long to get going and it was a bit of a hike to get to
the place that we played, but we had a great time.

Time flies when you're having fun. Here are a few of our
engagement pictures and wedding pictures. I think I look
a little older and fatter now.
Being married and being a Dad is just great. April is the
best thing that ever happened to me. I have no idea where
I would be with out her. She is so great, I still can't believe
I was able to get her to marry me. I'm so lucky. Now we
have two wonderful kids that I cherish every minute with.
Yeah things get a little crazy sometimes but that's life. I
wouldn't trade it for anything.

go wakeboarding with my old friend Josiah.
He's pretty much pro and me, not so much. I'm
just happy to be out on the lake. We went at
6 in the morning. The air was a little chilly
but the water was great. Jimmy Joe and Doug came
along. It was awesome.

April's Near Death Experience

There are so many things to be told about our fourth
of July this year. This is the most memorable.
All day on the 3rd of july, april had a quest to
find a 4th of july pinata. Nobody had them.
finally, we found a mexican shop that had this
sweet one. All the little kids took a turn and
finally jacob took a turn. He is my sisters nephew.
An important thing to remember is that he is
one of the top high school hockey players in the
state of Utah. So, needless to say when he swings,
he's has some power behind it.
You may need to watch the video twice to really
appreciate how close this was to April's head who
was filming.

I love small town fairs

So last week we went to Strawberry days in
Pleasant Grove. We had the best strawberries
and cream I've ever had. We had tons of fun.
When we got there, Zade had fallen asleep and
we bought him a full access wristband. Unlimited
rides. So we were excited to wake him up and get him
going on the rides. The video clip shows us trying to
wake up the poor kid so he could have fun. We had
so much fun being together, got lots of great photos.
Probably my favorite one of the night is the one of me
and Zade on the big circle ride together.
His little feet are barely hanging off. This is an Adult ride
that goes around in circles very fast and gives you butterflies in
your stomach. Zade asked if he could go on it so I asked the
worker and he just said whatever. Theres no way he was
big enough to go on it but he survived. His eyes were rolling
around in his head a little but he made it. It was great.
Daisy was so cute, she didn't get to go on many rides but
when she did she had the biggest smile on her face.

Bridal Veil Falls and Thomas the Train

Today we decided to go to Heber for the day
with Thomas the Train. It was the best day
ever.
We decided to stop off at Bridal Veil falls,
the weather was perfect we had some snacks
and dipped our feet in the water and just took
a nice relaxing stroll through the canyon.
Then it was off to Heber to ride thomas the train.
Zade loves thomas, james, percy and the whole
gang. He even got to see Sir topham hat who
placed his stumpy hand on zades head.
Zade got a tattoo, devoured the cotton candy.
April kissed a 6 week old camel. Daisy was happy
as could be. It doesn't get any better than this.

So we have done a lot of FUN StUfF the last few days. I turned 26 Last Monday. Thanks Rochelle for the Party! Easter was SO fun this year!!! Zade is finally old enough to play the games. We went to Ruby's and Fred's for a Easter egg hunt on Saturday. They had over 500 Eggs! They were EVERYWHERE! And Then we had a rockband party at our house. We stayed up till 2:00 am. So this should be my last post EVER about Ogden. Here is a little recap of our experience with the millionaire inverstor group(TMIG), who helped us purchase the house in Ogden. If you still don't know the story of why we bought our that house here goes. A few years ago we were living in West jordan and I was interested in investing in Real Estate. I saw my friend Chad Bawden at a wedding. I asked him what he was up to for small talk and he told me about TMIG. They were a company that used peoples credit scores to purchase houses at 75% of market value. They would then resell it to me at full market price and use the difference of the money to fix up the house and have an emergency fund if we needed to get renters into. Then split all the profits. Sounded good,

Dan Debenham (Click here) was the guy in charge, a nice lds guy you could trust. I gave them power of attorney to buy house for me. I had fairly poor credit so they were only able to purchase this house. They bought it for $40,000 and sold it to me for $75,000. After like a year of owning the house I started getting notices from the banks saying the payments were late. I took matters into my own hands went to Dan's house on the hill probably worth 6 million dollars or so.
A little surprised at the size of the house and the hummer in the driveway i took the key and made the trek out to Ogden to see my investment for the first time. The roof had 5 layers of shingles on it. Which is illegal. The Plumbing was completley done wrong, some windows were replaced but done very wrong. The roof had completely caved in from the rain in one bedroom. The porch was sagging so much, the insurance company would not cover it.
So we tried to fix it up and sell it. We were unable to do so. We rented it out to two different tenants, both we had to evict for not paying. The second even took us to court for renting a house that was not in liveable conditions when he was the one who contacted me and wanted to rent it when I wasn't even listing it for rent. So finally with no end to the debt cycle we were in, we decided to sell our home in West jordan and use the equity money to fix up the house, live in it for a while and try to sell it (inspired by Dave Ramsey to get out of debt). Ogden was a very interesting place to say the least. We finally sold the house cut our losses and have moved on. We survived though with only a few small items being stolen from us. We are happy to say that today we are living essentially debt free exept for the house, which we love and will be living here for a long time. The video below is some clips i took while documenting the remodel experience. So If anybody out there is thinking of flipping houses or getting into real estate. Maybe this can help a little with the decision.

What was i THINKING!?!?!

Today i feel like a failure of a mom. I let zade eat waffles for breakfast (Wich i think is just all sugar not a real breakfast) Then i went to go make lunch and we were out of almost everything so i decided to go to the store and get some food. Well by time we got home zade had fallen asleep in the van and i put him to bed for a nap. Then Doug brought over some pink cupcakes for us to enjoy! (THANKS DOUG THEY WERE YUMMY!!) So yummy that zade woke up from his nap. I was chatting with the neighbor and didn't notice that Zade had eaten 4 cupcakes and was on his 5th. In a panic i made him a grilled cheese sandwich but he was full from cupcakes so refused to eat more than a little tiny bite. Then he demanded Chocolate milk......Dinner roles around and he wants more chocolate milk with his Chicken noodle soup. He wasn't eating so i started the "Take a bite or go to bed" Bit. He ate 7 good bites and then looked up at me with that face.... The "Im going to hurl" face. So i grab him and run for the sink. To late.. He got me right in the face. and the whole kitchen was covered in pink stink. What a day.

Itty Bitty Ball

Zade started itty bitty ball on tuesday. It's an introduction to some of the major sports like baseball, basketball football and volleyball. The first day was baseball.

Superbowl Party

We had our first real party at our house. We still need to
have a housewarming party though. Thanks to everyone
who came over for the superbowl party. It was tons of fun
and we actually watched the game and it was actually exciting.
Unfortunately joanna and daisy's team won in the end.
I snapped a picture of daisy as the steelers scored that last
touchdown. She was pretty excited. The 3d halftime thing
was kind of lame but we had fun wearing the glasses mom

We got to go to a birthday party at noahs on thursday night.

Well things have been a little crazy the last few weeks. Not as crazy as the last time we moved though. We are officially out of Ogden. We had some great help moving. Doug and Rochelle came out to Ogden to help load the Pods and let us stay at their house for a week and have done countless other things to help us with the move. Mom came out and watched the kids while we loaded and unloaded. Jimmy Joe and Joanna helped paint and sheetrock some. Hannah came out all day and helped with lots of things. Johnny came out real quich when we needed him. Our pod driver was a crazy man and yelled at us a lot. We ended up needing to unload the entire pod in about an hour. Me johnny doug and ethan were able to do it.
I can't even begin to say how much we love our new house. It feels like a mansion compared to our ogden house. Gas tanks last longer. Our washer and dryer are not in our kitchen. Our ward is full of younger couples like us. We have great neighbors. We are so happy here. We will be here for a long time. We feel so blessed to have found this house. We love love love living here.

Well it was another great new years party this year. We had to do it at Rochelle's house this year because we aren't quite finished serving our sentence out here in Ogden. We had lots of fun though. Little Zade made it until about 10 minutes to midnight, then was all tuckered out. We had enough junk food to make us all sick. I think the sparkling cider got to Mom, April, and Rochelle cause they were acting a little loopy by the end of the night.

On about 24th street and Wall avenue every year they
do a little Christmas Village. We decided to get out of the
house and go see all the little buildings that were decorated.
It was freezing cold but we brought some handwarmers and
saw some kids singing Christmas songs and just had a great
time. There has been so much crap going on around me,
this is the first time it has felt like Christmas this year.
It was great. We ended the night off with my favorite
place to eat. Cafe rio. Zade calls it the Quesadilla place.

Potty Training

Potty Training has been going great.

We are on day six now of really committing to potty training zade. He is actually pretty much potty trained now and doing great. This photo was taken a few days ago and I think it really captured the moment. If you notice april has a red bottle in her hand from cleaning the carpet where Zade had urinated in two different spots to stick it to us. then was refusing to put on his underwear. Notice the arch in his back in defiance. That's an old trick he learned at about 6 months old when he didn't want to get into his car seat. I really do love that kid so much. Life is never dull with him around.

I love my kids. Being a parent has got to be the best
thing in the world. Zade is just full of energy. He
doesn't take naps anymore. He watches the grinch like
3 times a day. He ate mostly banana bread and popsicles today.
He is so excited for Christmas. Daisy is the happiest little girl
in the world. She is such a little angel. Everywhere we go people
are amazed at how happy she is and how big her smile is. We are
so happy to have the chance to be a part of Zade and Daisy's lives.
Every day I look at them and just want to freeze time. I guess that's
what pictures are for to freeze that moment in time to look back at.

Halloween and Price

I never got any pictures posted from Halloween
so I will post a few here.
We just got back from spending the night down in
Price. It was lots of fun. Juliannes house is
is so nice and she's a great cook. Zade had ton's
of fun with Sydney and Madison. The best part of
the trip was riding Justins 4 wheeler around. That
thing is so fast. I took Zade up the hills too and
he loved it. I'm definately going to have to get me
one of these.

Witches night out 2008

So Saturday we went to witches night out. For those of you who don't
know what this is, it is a huge event that gets bigger every year, it is mainly
for witches to dress up and dance and eat food and shop. It is tons of fun.
This is something that we look forward to every year. We left Zade and Daisy
with my mom, who took them to her ward halloween party.
This year we dressed up as Jack and Sally from the nightmare
before Christmas (Zades favorite show).
I had no idea that Jack was so popular. We took so many pictures
with all the witches. They were just lining up to take pictures with me
and sometimes April. It was tons of fun. Little kids would just come
up and stare at me until I would wave at them. They had a stage for
dancing that only the main witches could dance on but I made a run for
it and danced for a while. Everyone started screaming when I got up there.
It was tons of fun. I felt way too cool in that outfit.

the other day. I love all his ideas and words
he uses. The world is so simple and exciting
to him. I wish I could have a video camera
on him all the time capturing every second.

Flowrider, ifly and ice cream

So we've lived in Ogden now since about May
and we finally got a chance to go to the Larry
Miller complex and have a little fun. Tony came
over and we started off with the surfing. It was
way harder than i thought it would be. At first we
just got on and tried it and fell real hard. Then
someone suggested that we try the rope. so that helped
a little but we still weren't able to stay up very long.
Then we went over to were the little kids were and tried
the boogey board. Tony only did that once and got swept
away immediatley. He had hurt his finger falling on the
surfing. I did hurt my foot surfing, the top of the board
hit my foot and bruised it a little. Then we went up to show
tony the ifly skydiving. We werent planning on it, but we
decided it was time for me to give it a go since we were
up there anyways. It was awesome. I have to say i did
a little better at that than i did surfing. I will definately
be doing both again, it was the most fun we've had up here since
we moved here.

Decomposing

So I was talking to Jimmy Joe today and
he was bragging about how he has started
working out again. He said he felt like
his body was decomposing, aches and pains
for not doing anything. I realized that
decomposing was exactly how I felt. I
am not playing basketball anymore and my back
has been killing me. So I got off the phone with
him and went running with cocoa. There were lots
of interesting people along the way. In one
spot I saw a guy with a pit bull up ahead. So I went
off the side walk very far away from the dog. So we went
running by and the guy was behind a fence waiting for
us to pass but not really paying attention, when the pitbull
lunges towards us and the guy gets lifted into the air and
is completely horizontal trying to hold on to the dog. He
then comes crashing to the ground and the pitbull is loose.
So I lift cocoa up by the leash and hold her in my arms.
Luckily the pitbull backs off and goes back to it's owner who
is just standing up and he has a huge gash in is forehead where
he hit his head on the ground. I said are you ok, he said,
that's why I was back there. He went over to get the dog
and I took off running. It was pretty crazy.

New Driveway

So this is the last of the major home renovations
that we will be doing. The grass needs some attention,
I will get to that eventually, but it's great to finally
have this driveway in, after parking on dirt and a pile
of rocks all summer.

Yellowstone

So we went to Yellowstone last week with my sister and
her family and my mom. It was everyone's first time
being there. It was tons of fun. It's right in the middle
of the busy season for weddings so it was good to get
out of cell phone range for a few days. The first night
we stayed at Henry's fork of the snake river. It's about
30 miles outside of yellowstone. The second night we
camped in yellowstone. Everything went great for us,
the kids slept through the night and we were warm. Rochelle
and Doug had a slightly different experience vowing to never
camp again with kids without an RV or ten trailer.
Zade loved all the geysers he called them volcanoes.

This is the morning Rochelle vowed never again to
camp in a tent with kids.

The bison were cool at first then I got a little annoyed
that they were blocking traffic, especially
since i wanted to go fishing.

We rented these boats for an hour. Zade insisted
on driving it most of the time. He was very determined.
We went in circles most of the time while he was driving.

So we've been waiting for this since
we moved into this little house in Ogden,
but the office is all finished. I hung
the sheetrock and mudded in one day and
painted the next. things got a little dusty
as you can tell.

Gold Award At Weva

I found out yesterday that I won the gold award at WEVA.
WEVA is a world wide organization for wedding and event videographers.
We finally entered some videos and won first place in the Post Ceremony
category. This is pretty much the best award a videographer can place
in cause people enter from all over the world. So we were very excited
when we got the news.

Today me and my business partner doug,
did a corporate video shoot for alysses bridal.
It was out at the Old Johnson Mill in Midway.
After the shoot was over we saw this contraption
so we went and checked it out.

Garage Update

will have an office on the back of it.

So we slept overnight at Cherry Hills this
year with the whole fam. It was lots of fun.
It was great weather and Zade actually slept
thru the night. Last year at Green river lakes
was a little rough.

New Siding

So here is the virtaul tour of our new siding on
our home in Ogden. If you are wondering we
had a home in West Jordan. bought this house
as an investment thru a crooked investment
company. Long story short, after being unable
to sell this house we decided to sell our house
in West Jordan and move into this
one for a year or two. things are still a mess
as we are about to begin building on our garage
this week.

Okay so here's a few random pictures from what's been happening.
Here is a picture of the garage area from my house in ogden.
The evicted tenant left a lot of stuff behind. I called 1-800-got junk
and they went out there and quoted me over $900 to remove all the stuff.
I ended up doing it all myself completely filling a 24 foot uhaul costing
me under $100. we are currently trying to sell the house for about 10 thousand
less than we owe on it.

Zade is starting to want to poop on the potty.

April is still pregnant.
